Gastrocrom® (cromolyn sodium, USP) is indicated for the management of patients with mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is a group of disorders characterized by proliferation of mast cells and infiltration of organs such as the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrocrom inhibits the release of mediators from sensitized mast cells and has demonstrated efficacy in mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is an orphan disease affecting approximately 5000 people in the US.

Gastrocrom Prescribing Information: Gastrocrom is indicated in the management of patients with mastocytosis. Use of this product has been associated with improvement in diarrhoea, flushing, headaches, vomiting, urticaria, abdominal pain, nausea, and itching in some patients. In mastocytosis patients, the most common adverse events (<=5%) were headache, diarrhoea, pruritus, nausea, and myalgia. The recommended dosage should be decreased in patients with decreased renal or hepatic function. Severe anaphylactic reactions may occur rarely in association with cromolyn sodium administration. Gastrocrom is not for inhalation or injection.
